چکیده

We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study of Feshbach resonances in the Li-K mixture. Particular attention is given to the inelastic scattering properties, which have not been considered before. As an important example, we thoroughly investigate both elastic and inelastic scattering properties of a resonance that occurs near 155G. Our theoretical predictions based on a coupled channels calculation are found in excellent agreement with the experimental results. We also present theoretical results on the molecular state that underlies the 155G resonance, in particular concerning its lifetime against spontaneous dissociation. We then present a survey of resonances in the system, fully characterizing the corresponding elastic and inelastic scattering properties. This provides the essential information to identify optimum resonances for applications relying on interaction control in this Fermi-Fermi mixture.

LiNaK: Multi-Species Apparatus for the Study of Ultracold Quantum Degenerate Mixtures

This thesis describes the construction of a versatile apparatus to study ultracold quantum mixtures capable of simultaneously cooling fermionic Li and K, as well as the bosonic K. The main features of the experimental setup are presented, in particular the addition of a new species Na, which has enabled the study of the Bose-Fermi mixture Na-K. Three main experimental benchmarks are outlined: f...

Exploring an ultracold fermi-fermi mixture: interspecies feshbach resonances and scattering properties of 6Li and 40K.

We report on the observation of Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of two fermionic species, (6)Li and (40)K. The experimental data are interpreted using a simple asymptotic bound state model and full coupled channels calculations. This unambiguously assigns the observed resonances in terms of various s- and p-wave molecular states and fully characterizes the ground-state scattering pr...

Tuning of heteronuclear interactions in a degenerate Fermi-Bose mixture.

We demonstrate tuning of interactions between fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb atoms by Feshbach resonances and access the complete phase diagram of the harmonically trapped mixture from phase separation to collapse. On the attractive side of the resonance, we observe a strongly enhanced mean-field energy of the condensate due to the mutual mean-field confinement, predicted by a Thomas-Fermi mode...

Feshbach Resonances and Periodic Potentials in Ultracold Bose-Fermi Mixtures

This thesis investigates the possibilities to experimentally realize strongly correlated quantum systems by means of the sodium-lithium Bose-Fermi mixture. For that purpose, we have studied the intraspecies interactions of sodium as well as the interspecies interactions within the mixture. With a quantitative analysis of the sodium Feshbach spectrum, we were able to refine its scattering proper...

Tests of universal three-body physics in an ultracold bose-fermi mixture.

Recent measurements of Efimov resonances for a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of 40K and 87...
